Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games

A celebration of youth, sport, culture and community.

Land Acknowledgement

As we take a moment today to reflect on the importance of the land on which we gather, our provider and sustainer, we look to understand the history of the land. Niagara Region is situated on treaty land. These lands are steeped in the rich history of the First Nations such as the Hatiwendaronk, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

Intended to guide the relationship between the First Nations and Europeans, the Two Row Wampum is an important symbol of everlasting equality, peace, and friendship. It remains the foundation upon which Canada was built, and we recognize that this mutually respectful relationship between nations is essential for reconciliation today.

There are many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people from across Turtle Island that live and work in Niagara today. The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games stands with all Indigenous people, past and present, in promoting the wise stewardship of the lands on which we live. We recognize that we must do more to learn about the history and current situation of Indigenous people. This will help us better understand our roles and take responsibility towards reconciliation as treaty people, residents, and caretakers.

About Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games

Held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games are the country’s marquee event for amateur sport representing the highest level of national competition for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes. As the best in their age group, these young competitors come to the Games having trained long and hard to be among those chosen to represent their respective province or territory.

From August 6 to 21, the Niagara Region welcomed more than 5,000 participants (including athletes, coaches and support staff) to compete in the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. The competition featured 18 different sports, including an inaugural rugby sevens competition (women’s only) and the return of lacrosse after a 37-year absence from the Games (1985). The 28th edition of the Canada Games also marked the third time in history the event has taken place in the province of Ontario and the first time in 21 years.

Canada Games Council

In 1991, the Canada Games Council was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization responsible for the ongoing development of the Canada Games. The Council is the governing body for the Canada Games.
