Educational Program

Catch The Spirit Program

The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games staff is meeting with educators from our four school boards - the District School Board of Niagara, the Niagara Catholic District School Board, Conseil Scolaire Viamonde and the MonAvenir Conseil Scolaire Catholique - to develop fun learning opportunities related to sport, healthy living, and our Games.

School Assembly Program

Canada Games Assembly Program Brought to you by:
Pen Financial

This initiative from the Catch The Spirit educational program involves engaging Niagara’s youth through presentations at school assemblies for students between the grades of junior kindergarten to Grade 8. Shelly, Niagara 2022’s turtle Mascot, is also a key participant in those presentations.

This Catch The Spirit program is available in both English and French for any school that’s a part of one of the Niagara Region’s four school boards: the District School Board of Niagara, Niagara Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire Viamonde and MonAvenir Conseil Scolaire Catholique.

The Catch the Spirit program consists of three fun elements:

Video
A visual presentation that educates students about turtles, Indigenous peoples, the Canada Games and our Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.
Game
A Niagara 2022 Trivia Game Show, where two teams of four students answer questions relating to the video content.
Dance
Our mascot, Shelly, loves to dance! Each assembly ends with students learning The Shelly Dance, which is taught by either a live demonstration or an instructional video.
For those interested in having the Niagara 2022 Catch The Spirit program attend their school, requests can be made through your school board representative. Should you have any questions, please contact: Aaron Kleinberg-Kotzer, Coordinator, Promotions & Community Relations at: akotzer@2022canadagames.ca or (647) 567-2012.

Lesson Plans Built by Teachers for Teachers

The different units of the Catch the Spirit program include Arts and Culture, Goal Setting and Leadership, Healthy Living and Sport, Official Languages, and Unifying Canada. These are the five overarching themes of the Canada Games, and each of these units are designed to help your students. These lessons were designed for cross-curricular instruction, promoting integration of existing curriculum across the country and are not intended to be “stand alone” lessons.
