Accessibility Lead

Position Title: Accessibility Lead
Reports To: Accessibility Committee Chair
Term: June 2021 to September 2022

The Accessibility Lead is responsible for the planning of accessibility needs and temporary infrastructure for events and competitions on their respective Canada Summer Games venue. For example, the Accessibility Lead for Southward Community Park (where Niagara 2022 is hosting softball competition) is responsible for determining inclusive needs for the Games and planning the retrofitting to ensure the venues are barrier-free and inclusive for everyone. During Games-time the Accessibility Lead leads the team that ensures these parameters are met and maintained.

Overview:

The Accessibility Lead is a part of two groups: the Accessibility Committee, made up of Accessibility representatives from each venue, and a Venue Team. Every Venue Team is made up of volunteers that represent aspects of the Canada Summer Games (e.g. Sport, Transportation, Technology, Volunteer Services, Medical, Accessibility, Merchandise/Ticketing etc.). Led by the Venue Team Lead, the Venue Team is responsible for the overall planning, coordination and operations of their venue during any test events and during the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The Accessibility Lead works closely with all venue team members to coordinate the accessibility requirements and needs of their respective venue for Games-Time, as well as identifying any temporary  work and installations required to deliver operational requirements to create a barrier-free environment.  The Committee is responsible for identifying accessibility requirements based around inclusive design for planning areas, advising on these tenants and being present to act as a resource throughout the planning and execution phase. 

The Committee will also work with volunteers and staff to ensure adequate training and education is delivered around accessibility, persons with disabilities, and cultural sensitivity. They will assist in ensuring that disability awareness, cultural sensitivity, appropriate language, and accommodations are in place and understood for all 2022 Niagara events, before and during the Games.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Phase I – Initial Planning (15 months out)

  • Participate monthly in two meetings: Accessibility Committee Meeting and Venue Team Meeting
  • Initial review of site plans for the venue, including but not limited to temporary retrofits to ensure venues are accessible and inclusive
  • Initial development of space and operational needs
  • Ongoing communication with Accessibility Chair, Accessibility Committee, and Coordinator, Planning & Sustainability

Phase II – Integrated Planning (1 year out)

  • Participate monthly in two meetings: Accessibility Committee Meeting and Venue Team Meeting
  • Ongoing development of site plans for the venue - accessibility requirements
  • Coordination of space and operational needs with functional area leads
  • Create volunteer schedules for Games-Time

Phase III – Implementation and Games Operations (4 months out to end of Games)

  • Participate monthly in two meetings: Accessibility Committee Meeting and Venue Team Meeting
  • Ongoing development of site plans for the venue - accessibility requirements
  • Coordination of space and operational needs with functional area leads
  • Create volunteer schedules for Games-Time

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Strong leadership skills: mentorship, public speaking, motivating and facilitating collaboration
  • Visionary with devotion to teamwork and strong relationship management abilities
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional approach to problem-solving, getting to collaborative solutions and working through conflicting idea
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; ability to communicate in French is an asset
  • Ability to lead volunteers effectively
  • Ability to work effectively with other team members and able to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Works well under pressure and is proactive
  • Ability to make thoughtful, efficient, and effective decisions under potentially stressful situations/conditions
  • Strong knowledge of Para and Special Olympic sporting bodies, and the specific needs of athletes at a Games

Prerequisites:

  • A strong understanding of accessibility principles and requirements, inclusive design and overarching needs of persons with a disability 
  • Leadership experience with volunteers or staff 
  • Training or working experience in accessibility (barrier-free) auditing is considered an asset

Time Commitment

  • Ability to attend at least two meetings per month, with increasing frequency as we approach Games-time
  • Availability during test events at respective venue if applicable and appropriate
  • Participation in Games-wide Forward Planning sessions (total of five days over 18 months)
  • During the Games, venues can operate long hours- sometimes up to 14 to 16 hours a day for the entire duration of the sport competition schedule. Availability during Games is required, including 1-2 days prior to sport competition starting for venue set-up
  • Input into a post-event Final Report due within one month of Games completion
