Official Languages Lead

Position Title: Official Languages Lead
Reports To: Official Languages Chair
Term: Spring 2021 to September 2022

The Official Languages Lead is responsible for the overall planning and operations of activities related to the two Official Languages of the Canada Games at a designated venue for test events and Games-time.  For example, the Official Languages Lead for Welland International Flatwater Centre (where Niagara 2022 is hosting competition for triathlon, canoe/kayak and open water swimming) will be responsible for ensuring that both Official Languages are represented correctly on their designated venue, as well as assisting the venue team with translation both during planning and Games time.

The Official Languages Lead is a part of two groups: the Official Languages Committee, made up of representatives from each venue, and a Venue Team. Every Venue Team is made up of volunteers that represent aspects of the Canada Summer Games (e.g. Sport, Transportation, Technology, Volunteer Services, Medical, Accessibility, Merchandise/Ticketing etc.). Led by the Venue Team Lead, the  Venue Team is responsible for the overall planning, coordination and operations of their venue during any test events and during the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The Official Languages Lead for each venue is responsible for coordinating translation of signage and on-venue communications as well as conducting venue audits to ensure that the standards of Canada’s Official Languages are upheld during Games-time.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Phase I – Initial Planning (15 months out)

  • Participate in one Official Languages Committee Meeting Monthly.
  • Work with the Official Languages Functional Area to identify the scope and needs of official languages for a designated venue.

Phase II – Integrated Planning (1 year  out)

  • Participate in two monthly meetings: Venue Team Meeting and Official Languages Committee Meeting.
  • Collaborate with Venue Team Lead and all other FA’s to ensure that the use of both official languages are properly planned for as well as coordinating the translation for on-venue communication (ie signage and public address announcements).

Phase III – Implementation and Games Operations (4 months out to end of  Games)

  • Participate in two monthly meetings: Venue Team Meeting and Official Languages Committee Meeting
  • Work with the Venue and Fit-out lead to ensure all signage and on-venue communication is properly translated and displayed/spoken in both official Languages
  • Responsible for job-specific training, scheduling and supervision of Games Time Official Languages volunteers at respective venue. May assist in the venue-specific training for all volunteers at respective venue 
  • During the Games, responsible for ensuring both official languages of the Canada Games are represented through venue audits and assisting all other FA’s with games time translation.

Time Commitment:

  • Ability to attend two meetings per month, with increasing frequency as we approach Games-time
  • Availability during test events at respective venue as applicable
  • Participation in Games-wide Forward Planning sessions (total of five days over 15 months)
  • During the Games, venues can operate long hours- sometimes up to 14 to 16 hours a day for the entire duration of the sport competition schedule. Availability during Games is required, including 1-2 days prior to sport competition starting for venue set-up
