Canada Games Park Officially Breaks Ground

The Niagara 2021 Canada Games Host Society held its groundbreaking ceremony for the Canada Games Park at the Niagara Region Headquarters on Monday afternoon. The ceremony officially kicked off the Canada Games Park partnership between the Niagara Region, Brock University and the cities of Thorold and St. Catharines.

Doug Hamilton, Chairman of the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games, addressed the guests and welcomed the partners to say a few words. Speakers included Niagara West MPP, Sam Oosterhoff, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industrie, Lisa MacLeod, MP Chris Bittle (St. Catharines), MP Vance Badawey (Niagara Centre), Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley, City St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik, City of Thorold Mayor Terry Ugulini and Chair of Brock University’s Board of Trustees, Gary Comerford.

When the time came to officially break ground, Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games mascot, Shelly, was on hand to join Doug Hamilton stake the shovel into the ground. Following the stake, guests were able to witness an augmented reality display of the park being built, giving them a small taste of what is to come.

Canada Games Park is expected to be Games-ready come Games-time. In just over a year and a half, it will welcome athletes and spectators from across the country for the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games, hosting the wrestling, beach volleyball, volleyball, box lacrosse and athletics competitions during during the two weeks.
Acquicon has already begun construction on the site, which is located on the Brock University Campus at the southwest corner of Sir Isaac Brock Boulevard and Merrittville Highway in the City of Thorold.
