The Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games Host Society, in partnership with the City of St. Catharines and the St. Catharines Junior A Athletics Lacrosse Club, are pleased to announce that St. Catharines has been chosen to host the 2020 Minto Cup, which will take place in August 2020.

Bid presentations were made to the Ontario Junior A Council (OJALL) on Sunday, January 12, 2020. The St. Catharines bid group was successful in beating out Brampton and Mimico for the right to not only host the 2020 Minto Cup, but gain an automatic entry into the tournament. The tournament will feature the top Junior A teams from BC, Alberta, and Ontario, rounding out the field to four teams.

“It’s super exciting,” St. Catharines Athletics president Paul Coates said. “Obviously the A’s are a community organization. We don’t have an individual owner so the fact we can get everybody in the community involved, led by our board, is simply fantastic. The legacy we hope to be able to leave once the event is over is an incredible opportunity and we can’t be more excited. Economically for the city it’s going to be great. The number of people the Minto Cup will attract will be significant.”

At the same time as the Minto Cup, St. Catharines will also host the U16 Boys & Girls Canadian Box Lacrosse National Championships, which will take place at the Seymour Hannah Sports & Entertainment Centre. By accommodating both the Minto Cup and the U16 National Championships, there’s an unprecedented opportunity to showcase the game of lacrosse in Niagara, and as such the HOC will host a one week lacrosse festival in St. Catharines to celebrate lacrosse at the grassroots and cultural levels.

“Given the rich history of lacrosse in Niagara, combined with the new athletic facilities being built at Canada Games Park, we believe St. Catharines and Niagara can be a hub for lacrosse in Canada. Hosting the 2020 Minto Cup and U16 Boys & Girls Canadian Box Lacrosse National Championships advances that vision,” said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games Host Society.

Recruiting volunteers will be crucial to the success of both events. “There are 1500+ kids playing minor lacrosse at all levels across Niagara. That, combined with the St. Catharines A’s Double Blue Alumni and the Old Boys Lacrosse organization, we feel we have an excellent pool of volunteers to draw from who are very passionate about lacrosse,” said Dan Pilon, Vice President of the St. Catharines Minor Lacrosse Association.

Both events will commence on Saturday, August 15, 2020 and run through Saturday, August 22, 2020.
