Alectra becomes Official Energy Supplier of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games
The Niagara Host Society is thrilled to announce its partnership with Alectra, who will be joining the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games as their Official Energy Supplier.
As Canada’s largest municipally-owned electric utility based on customer count, serving more than a million homes and businesses within Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe area, Alectra will be adding the new Henley Rowing Centre (HRC) to that growing list.
Specifically, Alectra Energy Solutions Inc. will be installing and operating the high-voltage and solar equipment at the HRC to fully power this Niagara 2022 legacy facility — one that’s being built on Henley Island to satisfy the need for essential off-water training and support facilities for rowers at the Henley Rowing Course.
Alectra’s efforts will include the installation and ongoing operation of cutting-edge solar technology on the roof of the HRC. This solar-powered system will generate an estimated 43,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually, which is expected to offset the energy requirements for the HRC. Ultimately, Alectra’s contributions are going to help minimize the energy consumption of the HRC and allow it to operate at net zero by the end of this year, which is when the construction of the facility is expected to be complete.
“We’re very excited to be part of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games,” said Brian Bentz, President and CEO of Alectra Inc. “These Games represent post-pandemic hope and present an opportunity to showcase the beauty of the Niagara Region for the entire country to see, in addition to showcasing a robust socio-economic initiative that celebrates excellence on a national level. We're proud to support, not only the talented athletes, but also the legacy and opportunity these Games will bring to the community for years to come.”
“Once complete, and as a result of our contribution to the solar power installation work, the Henley Rowing Centre will be a net-zero energy and net-zero carbon facility ―something that means a lot to Alectra since we plan to be net zero by 2050.”
“We are very fortunate to be partnering with a company like Alectra that is going to assist us in delivering a strong and sustainable legacy for Niagara,” said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. “Integrating sustainable practices that are not only part of the Games, but are going to leave a lasting legacy for our community, is a critical mandate for our Games. Vital contributions like the one that Alectra is making at the Henley Rowing Centre are going to help us achieve that goal.”
Held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games are the country’s marquee event for amateur sport representing the highest level of national competition for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes. More than 5,000 participants and close to 4,500 volunteers are expected to take part in Canada’s largest multi-sport event in the Niagara Region from August 6-21, 2022.
