FirstOntario Credit Union announced as official sponsor of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games

The Niagara Host Society is proud to announce that FirstOntario Credit Union has become an official partner of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games — where they will be a sponsor to the 13 for 13 Cultural Festival along with two legs of the Torch Relay.

Serving more than 126,000 members in Niagara, Hamilton, Halton and Southwestern Ontario for over 80 years, FirstOntario has developed strong ties to the local communities that it serves. FirstOntario has also had a long-standing commitment to youth health and wellness. Celebrating the dedication and accomplishments of young athletes both before and during the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games is another meaningful way of showcasing FirstOntario’s support for both.

The 13 for 13 Cultural Festival is a one-of-a-kind initiative that will see each of Niagara’s 13 municipalities host an event, free of charge, every night of the 2022 Canada Games. These nightly concert events will celebrate the cultural heritage and identities of Canada's 13 provinces and territories through entertainment, food, art, dance and more. At the same time, when the Torch Relay begins next year, it will make the journey to Niagara after first being lit at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Once in the Niagara Region, the Torch Relay will make many stops before wrapping up with the lighting of the Canada Games Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony for the Games, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 6, 2022.

“FirstOntario Credit Union is proud to be a part of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games and excited to showcase the region and local communities we have been part of for over 80 years,” said Lloyd Smith, CEO of FirstOntario Credit Union. “We chose to sponsor the Torch Relay and the 13 for 13 Cultural Festival at the 2022 Canada Games because we feel these events allow us to celebrate the importance of community and best demonstrate our commitment to the cooperative values we share with all credit unions.”

“We are happy to be a participant in the 2022 Canada Games events along with other Niagara-based credit unions and engage with the community in a fun and memorable way,” Smith added.

“We are very excited to welcome FirstOntario as a partner to the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games,” said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara Host Society. “As a local credit union with deep roots in the Niagara Region, we are elated to have FirstOntario supporting not just the Games themselves, but two important Niagara 2022 events that will undoubtedly bring our communities together for a wonderful celebration after our recent challenges due to the pandemic.”

Held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games are the country’s marquee event for amateur sport representing the highest level of national competition for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes. More than 5,000 participants and close to 4,500 volunteers are expected to take part in Canada’s largest multi-sport event in the Niagara Region from August 6-21, 2022.
