GFL teams up with Niagara 2022 as the Games’ Official Sustainability Partner

The Niagara 2022 Host Society is excited to announce its partnership with GFL Environmental (GFL), who will be joining the team as the Official Sustainability and Exclusive Waste Management Partner of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The support GFL provides to communities across North America as an environmental service provider, in addition to their commitment to sustainability, led GFL to partner with Canada’s largest multi-sport event.

“In the fall of 2021, GFL was awarded the contract to provide residential collection service to the western region of Niagara, so we’re excited to have this opportunity to extend our support and commitment to the community by partnering with the 2022 Canada Games,” said Patrick Dovigi, GFL Founder and CEO. “We believe that investing in sport and community, particularly for young athletes, is important to promote good health and wellbeing in our local communities.”

GFL is a full-service North American environmental services company, offering solutions in solid waste management, liquid waste management and infrastructure development. Recognized by their signature fleet of bright green trucks and equipment, GFL offers a wide range of environmental and industrial services to businesses, communities and households.

Sustainability has always been at the forefront of GFL’s organizational mind, making them a perfect fit as Niagara 2022’s Presenting Sponsor of Sustainability deliverables. These deliverables will include a March 2022 Sustainability Summit, Earth Day 2022 activations, tree planting and restoration initiatives, community clean-ups, and sponsoring the N22 Green Team — which will be a group of volunteers responsible for undertaking sustainability programs during the Games. The Green Team will educate, provide awareness, and assist in waste diversion efforts, while also ensuring measures are in place to reduce the overall Games footprint, provide baseline tracking for future Games and overall awareness on techniques and opportunities to host sustainable events.

Additionally, in partnership with Niagara College and with support from GFL, the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games will be hosting a Sustainability Symposium on November 19, 2021, which will introduce the concept of sustainability in sport and develop important conversations in the lead-up to the Sustainability Summit. Registration for this event is now open.

“An important part of GFL’s sustainability strategy is raising awareness of the need for sustainable solutions,” said Dovigi. “Initiatives like the Canada Games Green Team will help boost awareness, providing a meaningful platform to further conversations and identify real-world solutions to improve recycling and organic waste diversion. We’re looking forward to bringing our insights, support, and experience as a service provider to help the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games realize their sustainability goals.”

“Given the growing significance of climate change and sustainability in sport, we are grateful to have a partner and industry leader like GFL join our team to help advance our green initiatives between now and next summer,” said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara 2022 Host Society. “As an innovative company who shares our vision on sustainability and environmental awareness, GFL will undoubtedly help us create a positive and lasting legacy by educating our Games participants and visitors, optimizing waste diversion, and reducing the overall footprint of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.”

Held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games are the country’s marquee event for amateur sport representing the highest level of national competition for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes. More than 5,000 participants and close to 4,500 volunteers are expected to take part in Canada’s largest multi-sport event in the Niagara Region from August 6-21, 2022.
