Mascot Challenge closes and submissions are in review

When it came time to decide on a mascot for the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games, it was clear from the beginning that it should be a turtle, an important animal and symbol for the Niagara region, for Canada Games and for Canada.

While the turtle was chosen, ultimately it will be Niagara’s youth deciding on the final mascot design and name. That is why on May 23rd students from across Niagara were invited to White Oaks Resort & Spa resort to kick off the Niagara 2021 Mascot Challenge.

A roomful of loud and excited kids from Niagara Catholic District School Board, District School Board of Niagara, as well as from French school boards Conseil Scolaire Catholique MonAvenir, and Conseil Scolaire Viamonde, were all in attendance at White Oaks.

With Master of Ceremonies, Bawe Nsame encouraging them to rally, students from St. Catharines and Welland celebrated the turtle and the upcoming Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games.

The challenge started on World Turtle Day – a day to focus on the importance of turtles and to promote their protection as habitats are threatened around the world.

Concluding on June 30th, the mascot challenge will run the length of National Indigenous History month, allowing us to pay tribute to the well-established indigenous communities in Niagara region and the cultural importance of their inclusion in the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games.

In submitting designs and names for the mascot, students are asked to contemplate the significance of turtles to the ingidengous community, to submit a name that works in both English and in French, as well as embracing the importance of the Games as they return to Ontario.

A Canada Games panel of judges will review all submissions over the course of summer 2019 and winners will be notified by telephone, with the winning mascot being unveiled towards fall 2019. The winners of each the design contest and the name contest will receive a prize pack valued at $1 000 courtesy of Sparks Niagara.

Once the winning entry is selected and the costume is made, the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games mascot will have a very visible presence throughout Niagara in the lead up to and during the Games.
