NIAGARA 2021 CANADA SUMMER GAMES NARROWS MEDAL DESIGN CONTEST TO SIX SEMI-FINALISTS

All six remaining candidates are Niagara residents & will receive a $500 honorarium for being shortlisted

April 14, 2020 (Niagara, ON) – After receiving over 45 submissions, the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games Medal Design Committee has selected six semi-finalists, all local artists, who will advance to the next phase of the program — which will see the eventual winner design the medals that will be presented to the athletes during the 2021 Games.

The six chosen local artists are David Antscherl, Leon James, Shaun O’Melia, Nick Printup, Elaine Wallis and Rebecca Winstanley. Collectively, the candidates have a wide range of backgrounds. Many of them own and operate businesses in the Niagara Region, while some have even graduated from or are attending Niagara College and Brock University.

“I was honoured to be part of the medal review process with my colleagues from the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games. The exceptional talent of many of the artists was most impressive,” said Debbie Zimmerman, Chief Executive Officer of the Grape Growers of Ontario and a member of Niagara 2021’s Medal Design Committee. “Niagara’s spirit was demonstrated so succinctly by the six semi-finalists selected to design the medals for the 2021 Games. Their passion for Niagara was reflected in each of their submissions, which made this process most gratifying.”

The artistic efforts of each semi-finalist can be seen across the Niagara Region. Whether that's Antscherl’s artworks at The Pumphouse, James’ medals for the 2010 FISA World Masters Regatta in St. Catharines, Printup’s film ‘Our Sisters in Spirit’, O’Melia’s sleeve design for Brimstone Brewing, Winstanley’s work with Peller Estates, or Wallis’ mural at the corner of St. Lawrence Avenue and Queen Street in Niagara Falls — you don't have to look far to see the incredible creativity and work done by all these local artists.

“Being considered gives me such a great deal of accomplishment already, knowing that my work spoke to the panel of judges. That my talents would be appreciated by my peers and being a part of this with five other skilled designers is such a great achievement,” said Winstanley, one of the six remaining candidates. Wallis, another semi-finalist, added: “I can only imagine the tremendous amount of training, discipline and tenacity it takes for an athlete to earn one of these medals, so I know, if my design is selected, it will not only be a legacy for myself as a designer but most importantly for the athlete and I will definitely take that to heart.”

The next phase of this program will see the six semi-finalists tasked with creating a design of their vision for Niagara 2021’s medals. TECK Resources, the exclusive medal supplier of the Canada Games, has provided them with instructions for this next step. The candidates will need to submit their medal design by the end of April, before the six-member Medal Design Committee will critique their submissions and shortlist the group to three finalists.
