Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games declared an official True Sport Games
July 25, 2022 (Niagara, Ont.) — In recognition of the belief that good sport can make a great difference, the Niagara 2022 Host Society has declared the 2022 Canada Summer Games a True Sport event. This means that the values of fairness, excellence, inclusion and fun will be at the heart of the 28th edition of the Canada Games. Athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators will be encouraged to bring the True Sport Principles to life through their actions, thereby making a statement about the kind of sport they want to be a part of.
Through this commitment to True Sport, the Games aim to foster a culture of sport that instills character in participants, strengthens the communities involved, and increases opportunities for personal excellence. It brings together a celebration of what makes the Canada Games special and embodies True Sport: athletes coming together and sharing their passion and love of physical activity, while hosting a welcoming and inclusive Games environment for all — as one of the only competitions in the world where able-bodied athletes and athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities compete side-by-side.
There are a few ways that participants and spectators can see True Sport come to life at the Games. Niagara 2022 invites the community to join in and use the hashtag #TrueSportMoments to celebrate good sport and respectful competition moments in the lead up to and during the Games. True Sport Principles banners will be hung at every venue to raise awareness of the seven principles and serve as a reminder of the behaviour that is expected at the sport competitions. The True Sport oaths and a True Sport flag will be included during the Opening Ceremony, which will be held on August 6 at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.
“We hope to see all provincial and territorial teams at the Canada Games bring True Sport to life through fun and meaningful activities. The Games are the perfect place for positive sport experiences to empower all participants to live the True Sport Principles on and off the field of play,” said Karri Dawson, Executive Director, Values-Based Sport, Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). “Good luck to all the athletes competing in Niagara this summer!”
“The Canada Games have been a longtime champion of True Sport as we strive to strengthen the fabric of Canada through the power of sport,” said Evan Johnston, Chair of the Canada Games Council. “Sport is transformative. Through values-based sport, we believe the Canada Games spark greatness in athletes, leaders and communities from far and wide both on and off the field of play. We look forward to uniting the nation in celebration of the positive power of sport in Niagara this August.”
"In order to help inspire all of those participating and attending the Games, we are committed to upholding all seven True Sport Principles," said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara 2022 Host Society."Fairness, excellence, inclusion, and fun will be at the heart of this event, which will allow us to create a positive and unforgettable sporting experience for everyone."
Held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games are the country’s marquee event for amateur sport representing the highest level of national competition for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes. The 28th edition of the Canada Games will mark just the third occasion in the event’s history that it will have taken place in the province of Ontario and the first time in 21 years. In total, more than 5,000 participants and close to 4,500 volunteers are expected to take part in the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games scheduled for August 6-21. The 2022 Games will take place at 19 different venues across the Niagara Region and feature 18 different sports, including an inaugural rugby sevens competition and the return of lacrosse after a 37-year absence from the Games.
